The Presidential Speech on George Floyd that should have happened.
Preamble
In the wake of police killing of George Floyd May 25th 2020, the President has been silent. There was no national address. There was no rallying cry for unity, for peace, and for justice. Only silence. This is in part what could have been.
My fellow Americans,
Over the past week we have experienced heartbreak and anger at the brutal death of George Floyd. A man’s life cut far too short. The injustice of such a heinous act caught on camera for all to see.
We are all looking for answers, for justice, and retribution; And we will try to find them as we question the officers in-question who are now in custody. Justice will be served. You elected me on reformation, and that begins with our justice system. Over the coming days and weeks I will be using any and all methods including my executive power to ensure injustices, such as these become distant memories of the past.
Violent criminal elements threaten to tarnish the good memories of George Floyd and the Protestors who bring these issues to light. The anarchy roaming the streets is understandable, but unacceptable for a nation as great as ours. The opportunistic looting is inexcusable and is not only criminal, but many of those businesses looted are those who support change and justice.
The buildings being burned and destroyed are those of your neighbours. They are your small businesses, places of worship, historic sites, and community centres. Your own communities, your own homes are burning and being left in ashes.
To let George’s community burn like many others around the country would be disgraceful for all he has done to build his up. This is why I’m mobilizing the National Guard across the country to secure George’s community like yours to protect his legacy. We must ensure the safety of all citizens, especially our most vulnerable.
We are a divided nation. Many of you feel unheard, neglected, or abused by Society. This is why over the coming weeks we’ll be putting together roundtable discussions with community leaders to better understand their grievances. We must rebuild, that begins by confronting the problems, but their legacies as well.
We need to hold those who seek to promote violence, destruction, and brutality, accountable. Not matter what their job, background, politics or ethnicity. We also need to hold ourselves accountable, to be inspired by the community efforts of George Floyd, and those who founded this country.
We must make our country worthy of calling it home.
Thank You, and God Bless America.
